Visiting Red Bulls pressure late in the second half to comeback agains Reading United

READING, PA (May 28, 2016) – Reading United A.C. were left lamenting a missed opportunity to grab a decisive lead in the Premier Development League’s Mid-Atlantic Division as the visiting New York Red Bulls U23 rallied from a two goal deficit to earn a 2-2 draw Saturday night at Exeter’s Don Thomas Stadium. Paul Marie scored his third goal of the season while Brett Campbell netted a goal for the second consecutive match.

Reading United found the back of the net in the 15th minute when Marie found himself at the right place at the right time. Campbell broke free for a shot on goal but saw his initial effort parried by Red Bulls goalkeeper Eric Klenofsky. The deflection found the feet of Marie who scored into an open net.

Fifteen minutes later, Brett Campbell delighted the hometown faithful when he added Reading’s second goal in the 30th minute after Zach Zandi’s lead pass led to a breakaway. With Klenofsky at his mercy, Campbell took a shot toward the left side of the net to double Reading’s advantage.

Following a flurry of substitutions at halftime, the visitors put Reading under pressure for much of the second half. The Red Bulls pressure paid dividends as they finally got on the scoreboard in the 83rd minute. Sevag Kherlopian buried a header into the back of the net off a cross from Nico Melo. The goal ended Reading’s impressive shutout streak at 473 minutes.

The visitors completed the comeback minutes later. Arun Basuljevic took advantage of some miscommunication amongst the Reading defense to strike a ball past Kraus to level the score, disappointing the hometown supporters.

After the match, Brett Campbell reflected on Reading’s performance saying, “We’re very dangerous in the counterattack and we created a lot of chances. If we would’ve gotten that third goal, it would’ve been game over.” He continued, “It just goes to show you when you don’t put away a good team like that, leaving them around, they had good technical players that were able to capitalize on two chances. It’s unlucky for us.”

Reading United travels to the Jersey shore on Saturday, June 4th to take on archrivals, the Ocean City Nor'easters. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Carey Stadium.

Reading’s next home match will be friendly against fellow Philadelphia Union affiliate Bethlehem Steel FC. The match will be played as part of the Philadelphia Union Festival.
