On Tuesday, Major League Soccer released it’s initial list of invitees to the 2013 MLS Draft Combine. Of the 54 college seniors, eight Reading United alumni were selected to attend the pre-SuperDraft event held in Ft. Lauderdale in January.
The combine serves as a place where the technical staffs of the 19 MLS teams gather to evaluate the selected college seniors and Generation Adidas signees one final time before the MLS Superdraft. The draft will take place on Thursday, January 17th in Indianapolis, Indiana and will be televised live on ESPN2. Players will be assigned to one of four teams and play in three matches that will take place between January 11th and January 15th.
Reading United alums from each of the past three seasons will be making the trip to Florida. Goalkeeper Scott Goodwin and defender Eric Schoenle represent our 2010 squad and played alongside current MLS stars C.J. Sapong, Andrew Wenger, Matt Hedges and Ray Gaddis. Forward Will Bates is the lone representative from our 2011 team. Our 2012 is well represented by defender Greg Cochrane, midfielders Ian Christianson and Paul Wyatt and by MAC Hermann Trophy finalists Jose Gomez and Ryan Finley.
The eight Reading United alums may be joined by other former teammates once the 2013 Generation Adidas class is announced. Reading’s leading goal scorer, Deshorn Brown, has garnered considerable Generation Adidas buzz with an impressive college season at the University of Central Florida. Brown has incredible speed to go along with his goal scoring prowess and has been compared to the second pick in the 2012 SuperDraft, Darren Mattocks.
