Tightly contested affairs are the norm between top-tier division rivals

WHIPPANY, NJ (May 22, 2019) – Reading United faces their toughest test of a young USL League Two season tonight against New York Red Bulls U23, in a match due to be held at 7:00pm at the Red Bulls Training Facility.

In their eight games played against each other, the teams are remarkably all square at 3-3-2 with both squads scoring ten goals. Reading, however, has found the better fortunate lately, undefeated in their last four against the New Jersey-based club.

The most recent victory came in the Eastern Conference Final last summer, where Reading staked an early two goal lead on the visitors thanks to All-Eastern Conference selection Khori Bennett, then held on for a 2-1 victory.

Both squads have had remarkably similar beginnings to their 2019 seasons, with each team winning their only league game handily, while losing the U.S. Open Cup Second Round to professional sides. For Reading, they dismantled Lehigh Valley 5-2 on the road before dropping a 3-0 decision to two-time defending USL champ Louisville City. Red Bulls dispatched of Evergreen 6-0 in their league opener, while dropping 3-1 on the road to USL-side Memphis 901 in the Cup.

Wednesday’s game marks the return of Reading’s Adrien Awana to the place he called home for the 2018 season. Awana played in four matches for the White and Red last year, primarily towards the end of the season and into the playoffs. The French-born defender played 38 minutes against Reading in the Conference Final while with the Baby Bulls.
