Two second half goals doom Reading to fifth loss of 2021

READING, PA (June 12, 2021) – Reading United slumped to their fifth loss of the season, dropping a 2-0 result at home to the visiting West Chester United in USL League 2 Mid-Atlantic Division action on Saturday night. Division-leading West Chester dominated the match, scoring two second half goals while limiting Reading United to one shot on target.

From the opening whistle, West Chester smothered Reading United players with unrelenting pressure that forced the hosts off the ball with regularity. While Reading were unable to mount any sustained challenge offensively, the defensive unit held the line against the division’s most prolific scoring attack. Reading goalkeeper Carson Williams stood tall in net, recording four saves on West Chester’s 14 shots in the first half.

It was more of the same in the second half, as West Chester continued pressing Reading’s every touch of the ball. West Chester broke the deadlock in the 52nd minute. Kyle Tucker whipped in a corner kick from the far sideline that found the forehead of West Chester’s Christopher Donovan who nodded the ball past Williams to push the visitors to a 1-0 lead.

The division leaders put the game out of reach in the 90th minute when Donovan struck again. The West Chester forward controlled the ball just outside of the penalty area and fired home from 18 yards out.

The loss sees Reading United sink to the bottom of the Mid-Atlantic Division with a 1-5-1 record at the season’s midpoint.

Reading will hit the road looking to end a three match winless run when they face fellow division strugglers, Real Central New Jersey at Mercer County Community College on Wednesday, June 16th. Reading United’s next home game will feature a return showdown with Real Central New Jersey on Saturday, June 26th at Exeter Township High School’s Don Thomas Stadium.
