Reading looks to act on their positive momentum in a clash with division leaders

READING, PA (June 22, 2021) –  Reading United has built some momentum here in the second half of the season climbing from last place in the Mid Atlantic Division standings all the way up to fifth. In fact, the last time Reading lost a match was nearly two weeks ago when West Chester United visited Don Thomas Stadium and took 3 points on the road in a 2-0 victory.

The two teams will meet again Wednesday, this time at Kiladres Turf Field, to play their third and final match of the year. West Chester has already clinched the season series thanks to the aforementioned road victory plus another 2-0 victory on May 19. In both matchups, West Chester smothered Reading with unrelenting defensive pressure which eventually led to opportunities to score at the other end.

However, Reading is a much different team than they were during those two losses. They have seemingly found their footing on offense last week after a 2-2 draw with Real Central New Jersey and a 2-1 victory over Northern Virginia FC. Putting up four goals in two matches, Reading nearly scored the same number of goals as they had in the seven games prior. While the offense is just hitting its stride, the defensive side of the ball has been solid all year for Reading powered by goalkeepers Carson Williams and Quantrell Jones.

Despite Reading United coming into form last week, they will be tested on the road against a stout West Chester squad. The division leaders have no shortage of offensive production, with three players scoring at least 4 goals this season. West Chester’s defensive pressure has conceded just four goals all season, tied for fourth least in all of USL League Two.

Reading United should anticipate West Chester trying to dictate the pace of play with their smothering defense. But if Reading can carry over their momentum from last week into this match, they can certainly give the division leaders problems before heading home to close out the season.
