Early first half goal holds up for West Chester in 1-0 loss

WEST CHESTER, PA (June 23, 2021) –  A 16th minute goal from former Reading United midfielder Troy Amspacher was the difference in Reading’s 1-0 loss to West Chester United on Wednesday evening at Kildare’s Field. The loss dropped Reading to 2-6-2, while West Chester’s win coupled with Ocean City’s first loss gave them an eight-point edge in the divisional race with their 8-1-2 record.

Amspacher netted the game’s only goal through some nifty footwork on the left side of the box. Going one-on-one with his defender, the Lock Haven graduate was able to find enough space to crack a bender that went just below the crossbar and in.

Reading struggled to gain traction during the entire game, as a stout West Chester defense was as good as advertised, picking up their ninth shutout in 11 games. Jackson Becher had two opportunities in the first half for the away side, but that was as close as Reading got to doing any damage. West Chester outshot Reading 12-3 on the evening, including 8-0 in the second half.

Carson Williams made six saves for Reading, including some impressive stops in that second half barrage that kept United within striking distance.

Reading now ends its season on a four-game homestand, beginning Saturday, June 26th at 7pm at Exeter’s Don Thomas Stadium for Throwback Night against Real Central New Jersey. The two teams tied 2-2 in their only matchup this season.

The remaining games feature Hometown Heroes Night on July 2nd at Don Thomas Stadium where all police, fire, first responders and medical heroes can enter the game for free. Preserve The Pitch Night will now be held on Tuesday, July 6th at Alvernia University’s brand new turf field beginning at 7pm. Reading’s final game of the season will be Fan Appreciation Night on Saturday, July 10th at Don Thomas Stadium. Tickets are only $5 in advance and can be purchased at readingunitedac.com/tickets.
