Kotula, Kurtas, Gschrey, Weaver Added to United’s Roster

READING, Pennsylvania (April 22, 2024) - Reading United A.C. announced today the return of four players to coach Tom Gosselin’s roster ahead of the 2024 WPSL season. United’s women’s team received the commitments (pending league approval) of veterans Morgan Weaver, Becca Kotula, Gabriella Kurtas, and Haley Gschrey.  The four players were key components of the “spine” of the first year playoff qualifying team of 2023.  Coach Gosselin summarized the return of the four stars for the 2024 season, “I could not be happier to have this core of players returning for our second campaign.  Last year these four anchored the Mid Atlantic Champs and represented our badge with not only the performance on the field, but with the class and accountability any program would be proud to have in their kit."

A former captain for the Wyomissing High School soccer team, Kotula is back on her hometown club’s roster for a second season but brings her prior WPSL experience to the 2024 squad. The United captain plays her college soccer at East Stroudsburg, where she started all 18 games for the Warriors, and ranked third on the team goals and points. Kotula also earned All-PSAC East First Team and CSC Academic All American First Team.

Coach Gosselin is looking forward to having Kotula’s leadership back, stating, “Such a blessing as a coach to have your leader return.  Becca was exemplary in our inaugural season and her dominance on the field was matched only by her passion for our club."

Boston University’s Morgan Weaver rejoins Reading’s squad looking to build on her breakthrough 2023 season. The sophomore midfielder played in 20 games, starting 18, for the Terriers in 2023, helping the team reach the Patriot League semi final. The former Owen J. Roberts All State player will be looking to resume her stellar play along the Reading backline.  In her first season with Reading she earned a WPSL All Division Best XI.

Gosselin praised Weaver’s playing style, saying, “The undisputed anchor of a stellar defensive unit. If you saw us play last year you remember #20   She is a perfect combination of speed, toughness and intelligence.  Not to mention the joy she plays with is such an inspiration for all of our young fans."

Another WPSL All Division nominee, Haley Gschrey, returns to the Reading squad to provide her midfield magic.  Gschrey played in 21 games (starting 12) and led her LaSalle Explorers squad with 8 goals and 2 assists resulting in an A-10 All Conference 2nd team nod. Her OT goal against Dayton lifted her team to the A-10 Championship game where her LaSalle team fell to St. Louis.

Coach Gosselin praised his midfield maestro, stating, “Haley returns to the squad as one of our most entertaining and talented players. Haley's flair and grit were so important to our success last year.  Her energy and athleticism were instrumental in our season.

The three-time Berks Catholic HS MVP Gabriella Kurtas returns to United for his second season with the club. The William and Mary junior had an exceptional 2023 collegiate season, playing in all 20 matches for the team enroute to playing a career high 1,003 minutes.  She also was a CAA Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll recipient.

Gosselin lauded Kurtas for her tenacity and versatility, commenting, “Gabby is returning as a silky smooth, creative and dominant midfielder who creates chances for us.  She consistently left an impact in each game she played by starting attacks, and defending first balls.”

Reading United women begin their 2024 home slate on Friday, May 24th at Alvernia University Stadium when they face LVU Rush. The game is scheduled for a 7:00 pm kickoff. Season Tickets for the 2024 WPSL season as well as single game tickets are available at readingunitedac.com/tickets.
