It was a brilliant May for many of the League Two clubs, including dominant campaigns to this point for Corpus Christi FC and Asheville City SC. The May Team of the Month was decided by USL league officials based on excellent performances in the month of May.

GK - Samuel Terranova - North Carolina FC U-23

Samuel Terranova conceded only one goal in May, in a 1-1 draw against a decent Salem City FC side. He’s young, steady, and his team hasn’t been so overwhelming that he’s had nothing to do. He’s a promising figure for the club’s senior team, still not having turned 20.

RB - Khai Brisco - Ballard FC

Khai Brisco couldn’t play in the 2023 League Two Final due to a second yellow in the semifinal against Flint City Bucks - and he seems hellbent on getting back to that stage. He’s a pure destroyer, reminiscent of Arsenal’s Jurrien Timber. Attacks have been more successful if they just don’t go anywhere near him.

CB - Renzo Bozzo - Corpus Christi FC

Corpus Christi have been one of the best teams in the league so far this season, and Bozzo may be one of the biggest reasons why. Previously deployed in midfield, his comfort on the ball has translated to the back line seamlessly. He played every minute in May, and didn’t concede a goal.

CB - Christian Shannon - Midwest United FC

Christian Shannon has been elite at the back for Midwest United to start the season, as they have one of the best defensive records and overall records in the league. Not much to say beyond that - simply a paragon of confidence and solid defense.

LB - Gabe Fernandez - Tacoma Stars

Tacoma Stars may be the best of the expansion teams that have joined, and it’s largely down to the play of electric left back Gabe Fernandez. He gets all the way forward, chipping in goals with a solid defensive effort.

CM - Moussa Ndiaye - Vermont Green FC

Moussa Ndiaye can be classified either as a midfielder or defender, but has played mostly at the base of Vermont Green’s midfield. He’s incredibly strong in the air, in a tackle, and comfortable on the ball. He can spray passes to anyone on the front line, and commands the middle of the park with ease. His incredible play in May has earned him the designation of Player of the Month.

CM - Diego Castillo - Miami AC

Diego Castillo has been bossing the midfield for Miami AC, scoring a goal and pulling all the strings for the Florida club. The results haven’t quite lived up to his performances, but he’s done everything in his power both in attack and defense to keep Miami AC humming. He’s a true box-to-box midfielder.

CM - Gilberto Rivera, scorer of two of Almaden FC’s four goals in May, has been a brilliant piece in the middle of the park for the expansion club. He was a standout in the season-opening win over division contender San Francisco Glens, finishing the comeback in the 72nd minute while impressing with his general play.

RW - Luke Persenico - Peoria City

Luke Persenico and Peoria City have been one of the stories of the season so far, blitzing all comers - Des Moines Menace aside - in the month of May. He tied for the lead in goals in the entire league, and has them in an excellent position to compete in the playoffs.

ST - Nicholas Kaloukian - Cedar Stars Rush

Is a 30-minute hat trick against strong opposition enough to put you into the Team of the Month by itself? Nearly, but Nicholas Kaloukian also happens to be unbelievably talented and a massive boost to the Cedar Stars front line. He can turn a match on its head in an instant, and can create goals from nothing. He’s been the best number 9 in the league so far, and may be all season.

LW - Sebastian Tregarthan - Asheville City SC

The South Central is run by Sebastian Tregarthan and Asheville City SC at the moment. Three goals in the month of May, with a penchant for putting the final nail in the coffin for the Blues. He and Rodrigo Robles have shredded all competition in their way, and it doesn’t look like that’s changing any time soon.
